Why it spread

No company controlled it. Cuttings were cheap and easy to root, the plant finished faster than a Haze and yielded heavily, and growers could sell it at every price tier.1,6,9 KindPeoples CEO Khalil Moutawakkil told Leafly the strain took over the market after 2003.1

Not everyone was a fan: some veteran Santa Cruz growers told Leafly they grew it and did not like it, or tired of its smell.1

The disputed parts of the story

  • Place: most accounts say Santa Cruz; Humboldt Seed Organization says Humboldt County.1,15
  • Parent: plain Haze, Super Silver Haze or Santa Cruz Haze (see genetics).5,16
  • Date: a minority account places Blue Dream's roots in the early 1970s, which conflicts with the 2003 accounts.17
