# Blue Dream: full guide ## Blue Dream strain (https://bluedream.com/) Blue Dream is a sativa-dominant hybrid of DJ Short's Blueberry and a Haze that surfaced as a clone in Santa Cruz, California, around 2003. It tests at a median total THC of 19.96% across 2,118 state lab tests of Blue Dream flower, with the middle half of results between 17.62% and 22.37%. CBD is negligible: none of the 1,243 tests that reported CBD reached 1%. - Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid - Parents: DJ Short's Blueberry × Haze (which Haze is disputed) - Origin: Santa Cruz, California, around 2003; breeder unknown - THC (lab tests): 19.96% median; 17.62%–22.37% middle half; 2,118 tests in 11 states - CBD (lab tests): 686 of the 1,243 tests that reported CBD found none, and the highest result was 0.61% - Top terpenes (median): β-myrcene 0.40%, α-pinene 0.33%, β-caryophyllene 0.23% - Flavor (as listed): Blueberry, berry, sweet, earthy - Effects (Leafly's top three): Creative, euphoric, happy - Flowering time: 65–70 days indoors for seed versions ### Quick answers Q: Is Blue Dream indica or sativa? A: Blue Dream is a sativa-dominant hybrid. Published splits run from 60% sativa (AllBud) to 70% for Humboldt Seed Organization's seed version, and Leafly rates it mostly energizing. The sativa side comes from Haze; its Blueberry parent is an indica. Q: How strong is Blue Dream? A: Mid-to-high. The median total THC across 2,118 state lab tests was 19.96%, and 7.8% of tests reached 25% or more. Recent results ran higher: 23.31% median in 2023 (128 tests) and 23.21% in 2024 (50). Q: What does Blue Dream taste like? A: Sweet berry. On Weedmaps, 47% of flavor reports say blueberry, 29% berry and 24% earthy; Leafly users list berry, blueberry and sweet. Seed versions bred toward the Haze side can lean citrus, pine and incense. Q: Is Blue Dream top shelf? A: It depends on the grower, not the name. Blue Dream sells at every tier: Leafly puts the average at $20 a gram, and Headset found more brands selling it than any other strain. On Oct 3, 2026, the median eighth on Weedmaps ran from $17 in Detroit to $45 in Newark. Q: Who created Blue Dream? A: Nobody has publicly claimed it. Blue Dream surfaced around 2003 as a clone-only cutting shared among Santa Cruz medical collectives, and Leafly's history of the strain calls the breeder unknown. Humboldt Seed Organization later bred a seed version from DJ Short Blueberry and Super Silver Haze. Q: Does Blue Dream have CBD? A: Almost none: 686 of the 1,243 tests that reported CBD found none, and the highest result was 0.61%. A separate CBD-rich line, Blue Dream CBD, was bred by crossing Blue Dream with California Orange CBD. ### A decade at the top of US sales charts Blue Dream has topped sales charts for a decade. BDS Analytics ranked it the best-selling strain in both Colorado and Washington in 2015, and Headset named it the top-selling strain overall in its March 2020 report, sold by more brands than any other. It is still the leader in California: the #1 flower strain in 2023, 2024 and 2025, with $25.9 million in flower sales from January to November 2024 and $21.7 million over the same months of 2025. It was also #1 in Leafly dispensary orders nationwide in 2025, a third straight year. ## Is Blue Dream indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree (https://bluedream.com/genetics/) Blue Dream is a sativa-dominant hybrid of DJ Short's Blueberry, an indica, and a Haze, a sativa line from 1960s Santa Cruz. Which Haze is still disputed, and the original exists only as a clone. ### The two parents Blueberry is DJ Short's indica, which he began developing in the late 1970s from Purple Thai and Thai genetics. It won Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2000. Haze came out of Santa Cruz in the 1960s, bred by the Haze Brothers from Colombian landrace genetics. Original Haze needs an unusually long 20 to 24 weeks to flower. ### Which Haze? Three accounts Sources agree on Blueberry but not on the Haze. The original cut and the seed versions sold today may simply have different Haze parents. Haze parent | Who says so Haze | Leafly; AllBud Super Silver Haze | Barney's Farm, Crop King and Humboldt Seed Organization's seed version Santa Cruz Haze | Weedmaps, for the clone-only original; Roots Cannabis Nursery, which rejects the Super Silver Haze attribution ### How sativa is it? Every source calls Blue Dream sativa-dominant, but the split depends on the version: AllBud lists 60% sativa and 40% indica, Humboldt Seed Organization's seed version 70/30, and FastBuds' autoflower 75/25. Leafly notes that plants can express indica- or sativa-leaning phenotypes. ### The Santa Cruz cut versus seed versions The original Blue Dream is a clone-only cutting. According to Roots Cannabis Nursery, a licensed California nursery, no seed stock of the original exists, so authenticity rests on the cutting’s chain of custody. Seeds sold as Blue Dream are new crosses. Humboldt Seed Organization's version is DJ Short Blueberry × Super Silver Haze, and FastBuds' autoflower crosses a Blue Dream cut with Blueberry Auto F4. Barney's Farm, Crop King and ILGM sell feminized versions. ### Is the Blue Dream you buy the real one? Mostly, but not always. A University of Northern Colorado study (Schwabe and McGlaughlin, 2018) found that 8 of 9 dispensary samples sold as Blue Dream matched one genotype by more than 80%, yet the samples varied more than a clone-only strain should. Growers interviewed by Westword describe some cuts with muddled genetics. Our lab dataset shows the same pattern from another angle: we excluded 775 test results sold under near-miss names, the largest group being "Santa Cruz Blue Dream" (84 tests). ### Strains bred from Blue Dream Strain | Cross | Source Dream Queen | Blue Dream × Space Queen | Leafly Double Dream | Blue Dream × Dream Star | Leafly Super Blue Dream | Super Silver Haze × Blue Dream | Leafly Humboldt Dream | Purple Panty Dropper × Blue Dream (Humboldt Seed Company) | Leafly Blue Dream CBD | Blue Dream × California Orange CBD (Humboldt Seed Organization) | Leafly Pinnacle (legacy version) | Blue Dream × Hindu Kush; generally unavailable | Leafly Blue Magic | Bred from Blue Dream | Leafly Platinum Blue Dream is listed by Leafly as a separate Blueberry × Haze hybrid from unknown breeders, not a Blue Dream offspring. ## Blue Dream potency: THC, CBD and terpenes from 2,118 lab tests (https://bluedream.com/potency/) In 2,118 state lab tests, Blue Dream flower had a median total THC of 19.96%, with the middle half of results between 17.62% and 22.37%. CBD is negligible, and β-myrcene is the leading terpene. ### How published THC figures compare Strain databases publish a single figure or a range: Leafly lists 21%, AllBud 17–24% and Weedmaps 15–27%. Seed sellers advertise more, from 19% (Humboldt Seed Organization) to 28% (Barney's Farm) and 29% (ILGM). In state lab results, 90% of Blue Dream flower tested below 24.50%, so the seed-catalog figures describe the top of the range rather than typical flower. - Coverage is uneven. WA (614), MI (612), NV (408), MD (255) supply most tests; Oregon and Rhode Island results carry no product names and could not be matched. - Some labs report higher THC than others, so we publish medians and middle ranges rather than maxima. No single lab accounts for more than 16.7% of these tests (49 labs in total). - Terpene medians come from 484 tests with individual terpene values, 405 of them from Nevada labs. Maryland reports only total terpenes, and Washington, Michigan and Hawaii report none. - We matched names strictly: crosses and near-miss names (for example "Santa Cruz Blue Dream") are excluded and counted, and duplicate certificates are removed. ## Blue Dream lab report (https://bluedream.com/lab-report/) The sharpest number is the state gap: 88% of Blue Dream flower tests in California met or exceeded 20% THC, compared with 7.8% in Hawaii. Overall, the median was 19.96% across 2,118 tests, with 7.8% at 25% and 0.3% at 30%. ### Key findings - The state gap is extreme: 88% of Blue Dream tests in California met or exceeded 20%, versus 7.8% in Hawaii. - In terpene data, β-myrcene led 68% of tests, and Leafly's myrcene claim matches that test-by-test lead. - On menus, Blue Dream was unusually visible: the Oct 3, 2026 snapshot counted 850 listings and placed it 2nd of 58, across 23 markets. - Published single THC figures skew high: three of four are higher than the 19.96% lab median, and ILGM's 29% was met or topped by 0.6% of tests. - Over time, the overall median rose by +4.91 points, but the Nevada subset moved −1.30 points. - Lab medians ranged from 15.07% to 24.93% across qualifying labs, and Michigan alone spanned 5.72 points. ### Which state has the strongest Blue Dream? California had the highest 20%+ share in this state comparison, while the full Blue Dream flower set sits near even odds at 20%: 49% of 2,118 tests were at that cutoff or higher, with 7.8% at or above 25% and 0.3% at or above 30%. Its median was 19.96%. The state split is wide: 88% of California tests met or exceeded 20% (83 tests, median 25.38%), compared with 7.8% in Hawaii (64 tests, median 17.47%). The gap reflects each market's growers, labs and testing rules, not only the plant. Yes, but rarely: Blue Dream reached the highest single claim, ILGM's 29%, in only 0.6% of tests, while three of the four single figures we checked sit higher than the lab median of 19.96%. At the low end, Humboldt Seed Organization's 19% was met or topped by 61% of tests. The published ranges covered more tests: the 15–27% range from Weedmaps contained 93%, while the 17–24% range from AllBud contained 69%. These figures are not batch documents; for a purchase, the relevant lab record is the certificate of analysis for that batch. The terpene Blue Dream has most often is β-myrcene: it led 68% of 484 flower tests that included individual terpene results, ahead of α-pinene at 24% and β-caryophyllene at 6.6%. That is a clear lead but not a lock, because α-pinene still leads a minority of tests. Leafly names myrcene as dominant, and the lab count agrees: β-myrcene led 68%. The terpene sample is concentrated in Nevada: 405 of 484 tests came from that state, so the shares mainly describe Nevada flower. Mimosa, Strawberry Cough and Green Crack are the strains with typical terpene mixes most similar to Blue Dream, scoring 82%, 81% and 73%; the least similar in the comparison pool was Tropicana Cherry at 41%. The nearest three all lead with β-myrcene, while Tropicana Cherry leads with β-caryophyllene. For the match score, we first take the median amount of each of eight terpenes and express those values as parts of their combined total; the overlap is the shared part of two profiles, and identical mixes score 100. A strain needs at least 30 individual-terpene tests to enter the pool, and this compares lab chemistry only, not how Blue Dream will feel. Among qualifying strains, Blue Dream ranks 33rd of 52 strains by median total THC, a middle-third position at 19.96%, between Runtz Cake (20.00%) and Pineapple Express (19.80%). Its share at 25% or more was 7.8%, ranking 37th. Its middle half is comparatively tight at 17.62%–22.37%, a span of 4.75 points, ranked 16th narrowest among 52 strains with enough tests. That makes results under the Blue Dream name more consistent than most strains in this dataset. Blue Dream and its neighbors by median lab-tested THC Rank | Strain | Median THC | Middle half | Tests 31st | Strawberry Cough | 20.00% | 15.88%–23.00% | 231 32nd | Runtz Cake | 20.00% | 19.00%–21.00% | 51 33rd | Blue Dream (this strain) | 19.96% | 17.62%–22.37% | 2,118 34th | Pineapple Express | 19.80% | 17.54%–21.75% | 461 35th | Girl Scout Cookies | 19.72% | 17.80%–21.92% | 567 Rankings require at least 30 flower tests per strain. For flower batches spanning growers and state markets, inside Michigan, labs with at least 20 tests differed by 5.72 points, and the broader Blue Dream lab spread ran across 21 such labs from 15.07% at Lab I in Michigan (60 tests) to 24.93% at Lab G in California (64), a gap of 9.86 points. The difference persists inside Michigan: the eight labs there with at least 20 tests ranged from 15.07% to 20.79%, a gap of 5.72 points. Because each lab receives flower from different growers, these spreads do not prove a lab reads high; they show how grower mix and lab choice can move the label number. Yes: across 733 paired Blue Dream tests, the high-THC third at 21.81% or more carried a 2.07% median total-terpene level, while the low-THC third at 18.82% or less carried 1.24%; the terpene median gap was 0.83 points, and the same direction appeared in three of three states with enough paired tests. State by state, the higher-THC side also had the higher terpene median in three of three places with enough paired tests: Nevada up, Maryland up and California up. As a weight percentage, total terpenes are aroma-compound measurements only; they do not describe effects. Median total terpenes in the lowest- and highest-THC thirds of Blue Dream tests Tests from | Tests | Lowest-THC third | Highest-THC third All states | 733 | 1.24% | 2.07% Nevada | 405 | 1.13% | 1.71% Maryland | 252 | 1.80% | 2.26% California | 46 | 1.57% | 2.30% Tests reporting both total THC and total terpenes. Not in Nevada: Blue Dream moved from 19.39% in 2020 to 18.09% in 2023, −1.30 points, even though the overall median rose from 18.30% in 2017 (31 tests) to 23.21% in 2024 (50), a change of +4.91 points. Inside Nevada, the direction flips: 2020 recorded 19.39%, while 2023 recorded 18.09%, −1.30 points. The overall rise depends partly on which states contributed tests in each year. We omit any year below 20 tests. Concentrates account for 25% of exact-name Blue Dream lab records, while flower still makes up 65% (2,473 of 3,820 records), with 4.7% shake and trim and 3.7% pre-rolls. This site's THC and terpene calculations use flower only. Longer names are kept out: 775 results included Blue Dream plus extra words, 17% of all results with the name in them, led by “Santa Cruz Blue Dream” (84), “Super Blue Dream” (31) and “Blue Dream OG” (28). They may point to different products or plants, so we exclude them under our name-matching rules. Leafly's top downsides are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness. ### What each source reports Source | Reported effects | Reported downsides Leafly users (about 14,900 ratings) | Creative, euphoric, happy; cerebral stimulation with full-body relaxation | Dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness AllBud | Creative, euphoria, happy; a fast, focused head high with mellow body relaxation | — Weedmaps users | Happy, euphoric, uplifted, relaxed; a clear head without heavy sedation | — Barney's Farm (breeder) | Uplifting without jitters; body relaxation without couch-lock | — Humboldt Seed Organization (breeder) | Strong, long-lasting, clear cerebral effect (seed version) | — These are self-reports and marketing descriptions, not clinical findings. ### Energizing or sleepy? Mostly energizing. Leafly places Blue Dream on the energizing side of its calming-to-energizing scale, and Weedmaps users describe a clear head rather than heavy sedation. Reports still vary, partly because cuts and growing conditions vary (see genetics). ### Why two batches can feel different Potency alone varies widely: one in ten lab-tested batches came in under 15.92% THC and one in ten above 24.50%. Add differences between cuts and growers and the same name can cover noticeably different flower. ## Growing Blue Dream: flowering time, yield and breeder specs (https://bluedream.com/grow/) Seed versions of Blue Dream flower in about 65–70 days indoors and finish outdoors in October in the Northern Hemisphere. Breeders rate it easy to moderate, with heavy yields and a strong stretch. ### Breeder specs side by side Source and version | Flowering | Indoor yield | Outdoor | Difficulty Humboldt Seed Organization, feminized | 65–70 days | 400–600 g/m² | Mid-October; 2–3 kg per plant; 3–4 m tall | — Barney's Farm, feminized | 65–70 days | Up to 650 g/m² | Up to 3 kg per plant; 100–120 cm indoors | — Crop King Seeds, feminized | 9–10 weeks | About 21 oz/m² | October; about 25 oz per plant; 5–8 ft | Easy ILGM, feminized | 8–10 weeks | Heavy (no figure published) | — | Beginner FastBuds, autoflower | 9–11 weeks seed to harvest | 450–600 g/m² | 3–9 oz per plant; 28–43 in | Beginner Roots Cannabis Nursery, Santa Cruz cut | 8–9 weeks | About 500–600 g/m² | — | — Leafly (average) | 67 days | Up to 430 g/m² | — | Moderate ### What the plant is like Expect a vigorous, medium-to-tall plant that stretches hard in flower and builds long, tapering colas; the original cut shows pale-to-medium green leaves with a bluish tint and abundant orange pistils. Leafly notes it suits sea-of-green setups, and clones root quickly. Teachers like it for the same reasons. Ed Rosenthal chose Blue Dream as the one example hybrid in his Cannabis Grower's Handbook, and an Oaksterdam University instructor uses it in class because it finishes indoors in 8 to 9 weeks, against 11 to 13 for a Haze. ### What to watch for Sources disagree on mold. Leafly lists Blue Dream as susceptible to powdery mildew and spider mites, while growers quoted by High Times and Westword value its resistance to powdery mildew. ### Seeds and the law in the US Under the amended federal definition of hemp, viable seeds from cannabis plants above 0.3% total THC, including THCA, are not hemp. Congress delayed that exclusion, with most of the new definition, from Nov 12 to Dec 11, 2026; only the exclusion of products with cannabinoids the plant cannot produce naturally starts on Nov 12. Home cultivation rules are set by each state. Among markets with at least 25 priced eighths, the median eighth ran from $17 in Detroit to $45 in Newark. ### How these numbers were collected - Source: Weedmaps' public product listings, captured on Oct 3, 2026 for one city per state, counting stores and deliveries within 50 miles and in the same state. - A menu item counts when its name contains "Blue Dream" and it is sold as flower; crosses such as "Blue Dream × Sour Jack" and pre-rolls are excluded. - "Median eighth" uses only items sold as an eighth (3.5 g). Listed prices may or may not include tax, and deals are not applied. - Only stores with a Weedmaps menu are counted, so a low count can reflect Weedmaps coverage rather than the market. - Disclosure: Official Cannabis's founder co-founded Weedmaps and remains a shareholder. ## The history of Blue Dream (https://bluedream.com/history/) Blue Dream began as a nameless clone passed between Santa Cruz medical collectives around 2003 and became America's best-selling strain, without any breeder ever claiming it. - 1960s: The Haze Brothers develop Haze in Santa Cruz from Colombian landrace genetics. - Late 1970s: DJ Short begins the breeding work that becomes Blueberry. - 2000: Blueberry wins Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup. - Around 2003: Blue Dream appears as a clone in Santa Cruz medical collectives, with no breeder name attached. - 2000s: Cheap, widely shared cuttings ($5 to $8 a clone, per AlterNet) spread it across California. - Nov 29, 2011: Rapper Juicy J releases the mixtape "Blue Dream & Lean". - 2015: BDS Analytics ranks it the best-selling strain in Colorado and Washington. - 2018: A University of Northern Colorado study finds more genetic variation among dispensary Blue Dream than a clone-only strain should show. - Mar 2020: Headset's strain report names it the top-selling strain overall and the one sold by the most brands. - 2023–2025: The #1 flower strain in California three years running: $25.9M in Jan–Nov 2024 sales and $21.7M in Jan–Nov 2025. - 2025: #1 in Leafly dispensary orders nationwide for a third straight year. - Aug 2026: Top-selling strain in California and New York, per The Marijuana Herald. ### Why it spread No company controlled it. Cuttings were cheap and easy to root, the plant finished faster than a Haze and yielded heavily, and growers could sell it at every price tier. KindPeoples CEO Khalil Moutawakkil told Leafly the strain took over the market after 2003. Not everyone was a fan: some veteran Santa Cruz growers told Leafly they grew it and did not like it, or tired of its smell. ### The disputed parts of the story - Place: most accounts say Santa Cruz; Humboldt Seed Organization says Humboldt County. - Parent: plain Haze, Super Silver Haze or Santa Cruz Haze (see genetics). - Date: a minority account places Blue Dream's roots in the early 1970s, which conflicts with the 2003 accounts. ## Blue Dream: frequently asked questions (https://bluedream.com/faq/) Q: Is Blue Dream indica or sativa?
